In an handwritten note, Arvo Zylo (note the relation between his first name and the website’s) advises me that it took six years to complete 333. The many hours that he put in are discernible throughout the three tracks of the CD, radical sharpness subjacent to music mostly born from of jolts and compulsions, classifiable without reluctance in the orbit of semi-dignified noise. The project’s unfolding leads the listener across stages of “refuse-any-melody”, industrial-scented cadenced autism, characterized by the same pros and cons of other releases in this battleground. This means that the physiological reaction connected to the initial impact is somewhat dampened by the absence of a functional evolution, the various constituents succeeding in separated scenes rather than agreeing to a proper arrangement. Things improve over subsequent temporal transitions, a distinct opening towards more “orchestral” sonorities making the difference; we even start hearing (perhaps illusively) echoes of samples in the overall crushing. I won’t name names to forcibly compare Zylo to the usual suspects, because he does not deserve it: like it or not – and I do acknowledge several of its intriguing aspects – this records shows a strong backbone and a good degree of individuality, regardless of the cosmetic qualities.

16 May: oddity of the month for May comes from Arvo Zylo in Chicago. His 333 (NO LABEL) release is a quite overwhelming mix of chaotic elements, where manic organ riffs and repeated loops are pitched against large gusts of disquieting and alien noise blocks. For all of these three long tracks, there is a constant air of alarm, as though things are going to get wildly out of control and potentially dangerous at any second. Patterns do emerge from the apparent chaos and fug, but this is definitely one teeth-clenching roller-coaster ride where you need to strap yourself firmly into your armchair before clicking the play button. The collaged cover artworks are printed in garish, acid colours and their imagery tends to mimic the mayhem of the music, particularly the pink dayglo chickens running over what looks like an endless field of scrap metal. “Alcohol-soaked, dark and solitary” is how the creator describes the making of this intense and strange album of circuit-bending and warped hip-hop approaches.

333 Reviewed at Killing Birds

Arvo Zylo was an unknown name to me before I received his package of releases. Info on the net is sketchy, but Zylo's press release emphasizes his presence on the Chicago independent radio scene, live shows in and around the windy city and an association with the legendary Illusion Of Safety.

"333" is a really interesting release that combines krautrock, prog, electronica and noise (sometimes all on the same track!). Very well paced with a real affinity for the dramatic buildup. These compositions are created from some of the strangest, oddball sequenced patterns, followed on by chattering noises, psychedelic synth tones, more harshness and stunning, rhythmic driving-forces that reshape the sound structure again and again. If this is breakcore, it's creating a new definition for it. It's a devilish sort of music that, at first, makes for the raised eyebrow and then the dropped jaw as this thing grows into a behemoth before your ears! I really cannot recommend this one enough. Likely to leave noise purists skeptical but this is for more open minded listeners.

Only half-evil, ‘333’ is only half-Noise, the rest a circuit-bent circus of manic rhythms and flamboyant glitch beats. The 60 minute looong-player by Arvo Zylo pays equal time to hi-fidelity Japanoise, hardcore breakbeats, and deep European surrealist absurdity akin to the solo work of Larsen’s Fabrizio Palumbo. While the half-hour intro track feels necessarily fragmented and piecemeal, the second and third tracks (“Deadbeat Deluxe” and “Plasthma”) both integrate nicely these elements into punchy anti-disco. Technicolor and crunchy, the duration hangs together nicely, but with the methamphetamine compulsion of the Industrial pleasure principle. Not to be ingested casually. A self-released, pro-pressed CD available for $9 HERE.

The kaleidoscopic monster of a 30-minute track starts at a carnival. It's the first slab of Chicago noise guru Arvo Zylo's 333 LP, and it makes a Goblin/Dario Argento soundtrack by comparison a birthday at Chuck E. Cheese (though the opening bars of Zylo's apocalypse seem to drink from the same horror trough). Destruction soon reigns, and three minutes in we're witness to the shuddering death of all that is melodic and whole. I'm not gonna walk you too much farther through the righteous nightmare. That'd be rude to the Zylo, but let's just say the industrial trap opens and there's hints of quasi-baroque escapism (and training) to accompany the otherwise brutal hell-scape.

An series of electronic illustrations of an emotional infatuation with 333 industrial work with a long history of its gestation, a Salvador Dali work if ever there was one in industrial music. played in various venues and group members and none over 11 years.. "with a sample-based material ranging from madly structured pseudo-classical, swing jazz, or exotica to industrial, noise, drone." which accounts probably for its over worked ornate baroque features. just summarizes, encapsulates the virtual modernity and spaces we now find ourselves in, in its eclectic disgust for the present it has to be a remarkable critique, I cant say I like it, but then I don't particularly like the current situation, or were the paintings of Francis Bacon pretty. it should be played for 24 hours over all media worldwide, and then humanity might see sense and in doing so as Camus advised commit mass suicide thus saving what is left of the planet.. to the seagulls outside this apartment now..(jliat)

Harsh noise instantly pummels you on this release over it's ten tracks. It's a bit on the long side but the note I received with it informed me that it is made up of two separate full lengths. Lots of interesting dynamics throughout both sides of this cassette. Not totally a HNW but punishing enough to make you need to take a break between side one and two. Subtle moments of melody desperately try to break through the noise like someone trapped under ice. Quiet dark at times but it avoids the whole blackened noise thing and just barrels straight ahead in the way some of the later Birchville Cat Motel releases did. I think this may have benefitted from being broken up into two releases but it's pretty damn good.

A long way was set before “333″, the album by Chicago based Arvo Zylo, before it was realized into its physical format. Like the artist himself describes, these recordings were made back in 2003, inside a closet that stood in the bowels of a rat infested house with a flooded basement (no less!), and was shaped and molded until it was released in 2009. This Narnia-meets-Fightclub scenario might sound like an irrelevant piece of information for someone who holds this album for its sounds rather than its history, yet hints of this moist background can be traced both in the cover art and, of course, in the music.

The three tracks of the album, all donning great titles, are quite long, with the track “Quicksand Eggs of a Beaten Pathos” overshadowing the other two by lasting over 30 minutes. Zylo begins with rhythmic sounds and builds a firm, even melodic ground for us to stand on, only to shatter it to pieces few minutes later, as these rhythms turn to blistering, pulsating noise. This shape shifting is something that Zylo does a lot in order to keep his audience alert. Brushing together dirty drones with water soaked sounds and eerie ambience, the opening track grows intense and hostile as minutes pass. About halfway through Zylo let the matters calm a little, thus allowing more delicate sounds of metallic hisses to surface. Later on, the music will turn harsher once again. When we get to the beginning of “Deadbeat Deluxe”, the sounds are distressing and chaotic, and Zylo adds broken electronic beats to the boiling soup he serves. “Deadbeat Deluxe” goes mental until a certain moment of Zen when it suddenly balances into a rhythmic industrial peak. Zylo creates pockets of sanity that floats in the massive, intense flood of electronic mayhem, long enough for the listeners to take a deep breath before the next dive, but not long enough to calm them down.

“Plasthma” begins with an airy, yet highly distorted ambient breeze. This track serves as a fitting closure for the album, as these relatively soft waves of distortion begin creating sonic turbulences that lead to the albums screaming end. ’333′ is rich in texture and musical events. Zylo brings a real treat in the form of a bumpy rollercoaster ride with sharp angles that prevent you from predicting where you are being taken next; a recommended experience!

The live debut of BLOOD RHYTHMS was on December 11th, featuring members of ONO: travis, P. Michael, Jesse Thomas, Dawei Wang, Rebecca Pavlatos, and Mimi Wallman alongside myself. Also playing that night was Illusion of Safety as a trio, with only their second performance that utilized a live drummer. This time it was with a stand kit of big drums played by Travis Bird, and they did a rare (possibly final) industrial set. Death Factory and Battleship opened. For the BLOOD RHYTHMS performance, we agreed to start with lots of cacophonous junk metal, including a gargbage pail, a belt sander, and a grinder. The rest of the group started without me while I was outside smoking, without any of us doing a sound check, and so you'll see me come into the mix at about the 5:00 minute mark. There were live projections by a fella named Nate who came in to work with Battleship, the video was filmed by Anna Gregoline. Thanks to Anna and Jesse for the videos! The result is something that seems like an alien satellite transmission from a secret dungeon on the moon. Enjoy!

Arvo Zylo - 333

When I first got this release I knew mr. Arvo only through his radio shows and some samples of live show I saw on the streaming services. I got interested so I ordered “333” from this artist. When it arrived I expected simple DIY CDr , but that was not the case. All the printing was of very high quality with nice label on disc itself. You rarely see that much effort in noise world. But that was just tip of the iceberg… What is important here is music, I mean noise, I mean NoiseMusic as one entity. This guy is on other pole of the noise world. It is not “delaypedalputalotofdistortionovereverythingandscream” kind of noise like 99% of acts out there – this is composed noise. It is made from sounds that are not noisy themselves, but the way they are played and all the timings blend it to one big composition which can be listened either way. If you start to listen it as a noise you will hear noise elements, on the other hand if you pay attention and listen to its rhythms and tones and instruments, you will hear it as the music. You will see that all is carefully planned and mastered.

First track “Quicksand Eggs Of A Beaten Pathos” start with the tune that sound like “The Residents” at their best and then slowly melt into noisy frequency shifting space. Around 10-minute mark some melody again start to appear from the depths of noise becomes dominant but then it melt with some tribal rhythm and disappear in background. Rhythm or arrhythmia is guiding us to some 20 minute mark where we start to choke under noisy silence but from it he pulls us up into some weird melody which sounds almost danceable (as much as it can be in noise world anyway…). Rhythm is leading us out of this one and we start with some his/heartbeat sound on second track “Deadbeat Deluxe”.

Various synth melodies and strange beats are melting together all along this one. You have nice and intelligent cacophony all over these 16 minutes. It will make your heart pump like crazy for then minutes, then it will allow you to rest for a minute or two with some calmer part and toward the end atmosphere build up again and push you heartbeat rate up again. But you will not rest now because “Plasthma” starts with some drums beating in empty hall and strange pitch shifting noises are all around you with some crazy tune playing in the background. You start to feel anxiety from this tune, and then tune turn to some type of horror movie theme (which add a just right taste to this album). After few minutes it decay into noise and they all together slowly fade away in void. Album reaches almost 59 minutes of brilliantly executed noise experimental music project. If you like to explore new possibilities in music world no matter if that is noise, or some experimental form be sure that this album you have to own. Whatever that you expect from this album be sure that you will be pleasantly surprised after listening to it. More surely – try and play it one more time as soon as it ends, I promise that you will hear so many layers that you missed in first listening and that you will enjoy even more.

Overall highlights:

Dave Phillips at Neon Marshmallow Fest (both sets, field recording set was really good too)
also from that fest Govt Alpha, Kevin Shields, Haters, Telecult Powers, Wasteland Jazz Unit, Sixes, Cornucopia, Fossils, Work/Death, dp/gx collaboration, Sigulda, Justice Yeldham, Pod Blotz, Dog Lady and I can keep going. 3 out of the 4 nights absolutely blew me away. And also doing a DJ set with a belt sander at the after party. Drinking after hours at the Green Mill with Derek Rogers. Many thanks for putting these nights together and doing good things for Chicago!

Chicago Noise Conference (especially travis from ONO doing his cover of "Motherless Child" with his adornments and his sheet metal), Forbes/Young duo on the rooftop, lots of drinking and comraderie.

Illusion of Safety doing an industrial set as a trio with a drummer on a stand kit of big drums. Whole night was good. Death Factory doing drum machine/rhythmic industrial with drills/guitars etc. Battleship doing a pretty eloquent kind of dark ritual drone type thing, ONO for joining me as Blood Rhythms, gentle yet chaotic wise people.

Everything at the last night of the Mopery in Chicago, and everything else at the Mopery.

Doing my first tour in July with highlights including Cock ESP totally changing my approach just by their hospitality and intent alone, John Vance, Seth Ryan, Disthroned Agony, Sigulda, desoeuvre bruit, I Am Foresight, staying with a tenant (Zac Szymusiak) in an 1800s mansion in Columbus owned by Mark Gunderson of Evolution Control Committee and hearing inspiring stories, meeting bbob of Fluxmonkey, seeing Irene Moon perform at Cool Ranch, riding with Paleface Destroyers and hearing stories about Native American History as it relates to their collection of relics that they've found in cemetaries, and more things I can't remember.

STL Fest in October - Riding with Neil Jendon and stopping in Peoria to hang out with Infirmary, having a record store there buy $50 with of stuff from me, The sincere support from Mark of LEMP, the inspiring solidarity that Peter J Woods was able to instill (although I was only there on Friday and couldn't see his set) the sets by Diaphragmatic, Pusdrainer, Brain Transplant, and more; hanging out with a fella named Ben and Dave from Skarekrau Radio/Brain Transplant at a jazz bar, getting lots of free drinks from a drunken rich guy and almost going to a symphony with him, getting drunk and riled up with Alex from Socially Retarded and Jay from Lechuguillas all night, much to the chagrin of everyone else who was trying to sleep, unfortunately. Sorry!

2nd Tour in November - Dead Audio fest - Houston - Reality (a 12 year old kid, best set of the night)/Zombra, Austin Caustic/Concrete Violin, Richard Ramirez, Steel Hook Prosthesis, Lychgate (and getting drunk with them into the wee hours also), Mickey/Screaming Fetus, Bereft, Biological Girl (and also for making me an awesome custom mask by request, it didn't do what I expected it to do, and it gave me new approaches), Olivia nonchalantly playing ukulele all night, and doing a cover of "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" for me at 3AM, probably more that I am forgetting, incredibly good night. Hopefully I didn't do anything stupid.

Austin - Getting a ride with So Boring and Chris, playing with a Crash Worship cover band for almost 10 minutes until the fires happened, the immense experience that MC Clitfart, Bubble Face, Polly, Logan Owlbeemoth, and others provided while I stayed with them at Disco Village, Fucking Breakdancing Ronald Reagan for letting out a bunch of crickets and setting up two killer shows in one day, especially Dromez, Sex Bruises, and Derek Rogers
-Arlington - The immense support, the miracle of finding a show thanks to Wasted Words at a CD Warehouse after hours, and drinking/hanging out afterwards, smoking in bars, Welby, Zanzibar Snails, Snuff Film....
-Having a late bus cause me to miss my transfer to Baton Rouge, and being able to hang out with a very good friend of mine, Lidia, short notice in Tex-Arkana. Riding through thick fog and sharp turns on dirt roads to an absolutely isolated ranch at 60mph.

-New Orleans - Drew Ziegler and his big heart, insatiable appetite for alcohol, surreal living quarters like a hidden circus shanty town inside of an abandoned iron ore factory, 100 year old junk and ripped furniture everywhere, old friend Dave Hedges, seeing Ratty Scurvics and his wife OOPS, MC Tracheotomy, drinking Bloody Marys or Bug Gulp Daquiris all day, experiencing a fully functional squat house and drinking bootleg ginger wine, getting off of the bus and going straight into a cabaret with free spaghetti and wine, fitting right in immediately, watching people throw spaghetti around and light fire crackers, Playing a punk show in New Orleans short notice instead of a sports bar in the suburbs, hanging out with Sven from Telecult Powers, playing an open mic tent and freaking out families and children, also inspiring some to dance before the feedback kicked in. Going to a soul club at 4AM and getting flirted with, having incredible trouble going to the bus station at 6.

Atlanta - My best set of the tour, great sound - the most enthusiastic and supportive 5 people I have ever seen, Eyedrum is an amazing place.

Cleveland - Now That's Class - Brainbombs on the juke box, Black Mayonnaise fogging up the entire room and blowing everyone's house down, Fluxmonkey, Murderous Vision (especially for having me as a guest), jamming at Bela Dubby at 2AM, hanging out with good people on Thanksgiving, drinking absinthe, Cunting Daughters, Mitch from Fascist Insect, Ghostpussy, especially Wyatt and Cool Ranch, Paul for making me a mix tape of Cleveland punk, Sam Goldberg for doing synth jams while I was comatose on the couch with a hangover - perfect accompaniment.

Columbus - ONO for coming all the way to Columbus in some kind of absurd motorcade to play my tour finale, Also Bennett/Skylab, Pusdrainer hacking at his noise briefcase and sharing his whiskey, again drinking bloody marys all day.

International Email Audio Art Project Volume 2

The Homemade Music Movement has grown from the roots of the Mail Art Movement, and in order to pay due respect and acknowledge these origins, I propose an international EMAIL audio art project in which contributors will send to me a one-minute miniature audio work in mp3 format (plus visual works if desired) attached to an email. These works will be published together in volumes online.
